Chitose and Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival

Ice Festival Created by the Blue Glow of Lake Shikotsu

The Chitose and Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival is held at the Lake Shikotsu Onsen, a popular hot spring resort in Hokkaido. This event showcases icy sculptures created from the waters of Lake Shikotsu. They illuminate with natural blue colors during the day and glow magically at night. Come check out the ice festival with its museum-like atmosphere! There are also hot spring lodges nearby, where you can relax in the warm water's embrace.

The view from the observation deck overlooking the colorfully lit venue is breathtaking and also a great place for selfies! The lights are lit up from 4:30pm every day, so don't forget to bring your camera!

Sprinklers freeze a variety of attractions using the pristine lake water, which is one of the clearest in Japan. When bathed in sunlight, a beautiful natural blue world unfolds. There is also a guided tour of the Ice Museum (500 yen per person) where you can learn about the history of Lake Shikotsu and the process of making the ice sculptures. This tour also includes an icicle making demonstration, so visitors can enjoy learning about the ice sculpting process from a different perspective.
