Chakri Maha Prasat Grand Palace Construction of the Royal Grand Palace in Thailand began in 1782 and it was completed in time for the coronation of Rama I. This palace has an area of 218,000 sq. meters, and is surrounded by the four walls whose length is 1,900 meters. Within the walls, the government offices and the temple of the Emerald Buddha are situated along with the royal residences. The center of the palace is dominated by Chakri Maha Prasat hall. This hall was constructed by King Chulalongkorn the Great (also known as Rama V) to commemorate the centenary of the Chakri Dynasty and it was completed in 1882. Today the hall functions as a reception hall. Chakri Maha Prasat hall consists of an audience hall situated in the center and the other two halls on both sides. The audience hall, which contains the throne, has been the venue for the presentation of letter of credence to each ambassador by the king or for banquets for national guests. The walls on both sides of the room are decorated with the paintings depicting the diplomatic receptions of the past.

National Treasure: Hikone Castle
National Treasure: Hikone Castle

Hikone is known as a castle town of Ii Naosuke and the fief of Ii family which yields three hundred fifty thousand koku of rice. The first feudal lord of Hikone, Ii Naomasa firmly established the fief which he received from Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu for his contribution to win the Battle of Sekigahara. Fourteen generations of Ii family ruled Hikone during the Edo period. The construction of the castle began in 1604 by the order of Ii Naotsugu, the son of Ii Naomasa, and the donjon was completed in 1607. Today, the donjon of Hikone castle still stands by the northeast shore of Biwako lake. It was designated a national treasure of Japan in 1952 and the year 2007 marks the 400th anniversary of its completion. This three-story donjon was constructed in a watchtower-style. Although it is relatively small, the splendors of the donjon, including various types of intricate gables such as Karahafu gable and Chidorihafu gable, undoubtedly deserve to be a national treasure. A snow statue of Hikonyan, the mascot of gNational Treasure: the 400th anniversary of Hikone Castleh also stands on the right side of the snow sculpture.

The Antarctic
The Antarctic

According to the continental drift theory, the supercontinent Pangaea began to break up about 225-200 million years ago, fragmenting into several pieces that eventually became the current continents. Today, Antarctica is the least affected continent on earth by the environmental destruction and pollution, and preserves important scientific evidence concerning the history of earth. Here you can see the Japanese Antarctic expedition ship Soya on the left and the Sakhalin Huskies Taro and Jiro in the center along with a whale, penguins and seals. This large snow sculpture dynamically expresses the strength of the creatures living in the harsh environment of Antarctica, and reminds us of the preciousness of nature in the region.
