The largest living fish species, the whale shark and manta ray are dynamically reproduced in this ice sculpture. The ice whale shark measures about 12 meters in length, and each of the ice manta rays are about 8 meters across. Today, global warming is causing changes in the environment and its effect on the living creatures is very apparent. We are witnessing that the tropical and subtropical fishes such as sunfish and Mahi-mahi (also known as common dolphin-fish) are now expanding their habitat to Okhotsk Sea. On this occasion, we would like the living things in the southern sea to be in the spotlight. It is our hope that Doshin Ice Square is a place where we can seriously reflect about the global warming.

Let’s make Tokyo the host city of the 31st Olympic Games and the 15th Paralympics Games in 2016! Let’s use ‘Mizuhiki’ (traditional Japanese red-and-white paper string for tying presents) to tie sports and culture, cities and environment, children and future, technology and heart, the world and Japan, the globe and peace. The superimposed image of Mizuhiki on the five ring Olympic emblem expresses our wish to create a new value for future generations. Here are the snow statues of three Beijing 2008 Olympic gold medalists; including the breaststroke swimmer Kosuke Kitajima, Hokkaido-born women’s Judo champion, Masae Ueno, and the softball pitcher for the Japanese national team Yukiko Ueno; to enhance our enthusiastic support for 2016 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The Hakodate Magistrate’s Office
The Hakodate Magistrate’s Office
zoom up
The Hakodate Magistrate’s Office, inside of Goryokaku Fort was built at the end of Edo period in 1864 as a directly-controlled apparatus of the Tokugawa shogunate to administer Ezo-chi (present Hokkaido). The office also dealt with commerce and foreign affairs related to the port of Hakodate that had opened to international trade. However, it became a battlefield for the Hakodate War during the Meiji Restoration – when a group of loyalists to the old regime barricaded themselves in the fort and resisted the new Meiji government. After the war in 1871, the magistrate’s office was dismantled and the building materials were reused for the construction of the new local government’s office. Goryokaku was opened to the public as a park in Taisho era. In 1954, it was designated the only Special Historical Site in Hokkaido. In 2006, Hakodate City began a project to reconstruct the Hakodate Magistrate’s Office and the project is due to be completed by 2010.

Sungnyemun was built in 1398 as the southern gate of the original walls surrounding Hanyang (present day Seoul) during the Joseon Dynasty. The gate was originally used to control access to the capital city. The gate became widely known as Namdaemun, ‘Great Southern Gate’. It was damaged in 1950, but restored to its original state afterwards. The gate was designated ‘National Treasure of South Korea; No.1’ in 1962.

Hamamatsu Castle
Hamamatsu Castle
zoom up
In 1570, Tokugawa Ieyasu moved his headquarters to a hilltop castle called Hikuma castle as a strategic base to conquer Enshu (western outskirts of present Hamamatsu city in Shizuoka Prefecture). He made some extensive repair works on the castle and renamed Hamamatsu Castle. The castle, built on the slope of Mikatagahara plateau, was later expanded and became 500 meters by 450 meters in size. Hamamatsu castle laid its ‘maru (sections of the castle, separated by courtyards)’ in a row. The most central bailey, containing the donjon, was called ‘honmaru’, and the second and third were called ‘ni-no-maru’ and ‘san-no-maru’ respectively. The castle stood on a stone palisade known as ‘Nozura-zumi’ which refers to the method used to fit the stones together. The original stone palisade built by Tokugawa Ieyasu still remains and the repair work is still taking place.

The castle was occupied by the feudal lords of Hamamatsu for twenty-five generations for 300 years throughout the Edo period. Hamamatsu Castle is also called ‘Castle of Success’ because many of the lords who lived there gained high-ranking government posts; including six Roju, two Osaka-jo-dai, two Kyoto Shoshidai, and two Jisha Bugyo; in the Tokugawa Shogunate in later years. Among those loads, the most famous one is Roju, Mizuno Tadakuni, the political architect of Tenpo Reform. However, the castle was demolished after the Meiji Restoration but with the enthusiastic support by the Hamamatsu citizens, the donjon was reconstructed on the original stone palisade in 1958. On June 18th 1959, it was designated a historic site of Hamamatsu City and small museum was opened inside the donjon.

Tokugawa Ieyasu was the head of Hamamatsu Castle for 17 years between age 29 and 45, and engaged in some of his most well known battles; including the Battle of Anegawa, the Battle of Mikatagahara, the Battle of Nagashino, and the battle of Komaki and Nagakute; all launched from this castle. Therefore the time he spent in Hamamatsu Castle can be seen as a trial period for his ability before he established the Tokugawa Shogunate which ruled Japan for 300 years. On the right side of the snow sculpture, there is also a small snow statue of 'Tokugawa Ieyasu as a young man’ to accompany the castle.

We would like to express our gratitude to Hamamatsu City Hall for lending us the material relating to the castle, Hokkaido Television Broadcasting Co., Ltd., and to the Ground Self Defense Force the 11th Brigade for their cooperation.

Northern Animal Family
Live Forever, the Forests

Northern Animal Family
zoom up

Many of the precious northern wildlife and flora in Hokkaido are endangered due to the widespread loss of riverine forest caused by development, reckless hunting, and smuggling of the protected alpine flora. On this occasion, we would like to present a snow sculpture themed ‘the animal family’ in line with the keyword of STV’s 50th anniversary, ‘environment’. It is our hope that STV Square is a place where we can reflect about the environment.

Here in a quiet forest of the north:

We can hear a hoot of Blakiston's Fish Owl protecting the young ones.
Stellers' Sea-eagle preyed on a fish for breakfast, and he is now feeding the chicks. You can see the little chicks adoring their brave father.
A clear stream flows through the forest. Suddenly, Sakhalin Taimen has emerged from the surface with a splash. He swims calmly along the water’s edge with his mates.
The forest appears to be peaceful as usual, but in fact it has changed considerably during the 20th century.  Today, changes in the environment, caused by urbanization are having an alarming effect on the wildlife of the north. The populations of numerous kinds of animals living in the forest have fallen sharply.
Big old trees that house Blakiston's Fish Owls are dwindling. Additionally, a number of Blakiston’s Fish Owls have been accidentally killed by the electric cables is rising.
Because of the soil-erosion control works, the number of rivers in which salmons cannot return is increasing. Subsequently, the population of Stellers' Sea-eagles whose main diet is salmon is decreasing.
More and more rivers and lakes are contaminated and the Sakhalin Taimen has become a ‘rare fish’ as a result.

Now is the time for us to decisively act to protect the forests and the northern animals.

Live forever, the dwellers of rich forests! Live forever, the northern animal family! Inspired by the project undertaken by Maruyama Zoo in Sapporo to restore original habitats, other zoos and research organizations in Hokkaido are going into action for preserving wildlife. We would like to express our wholehearted support for the future of wildlife and nature of Hokkaido through this large snow sculpture.
